ABOUT ME
My name is Yash Harkara and I have high hopes to one day be called Dr. Harkara. I graduated from Liberty High School in Frisco,TX, and now I am attending the University of Houston as part of the 3+4 Medical Track program, pursuing a major in Honors Biomedical Sciences. I am involved in various medical organizations such as Alpha Epsilon Delta (AED), HOSA, and Camp Kesem, as well as inter-mural sports. My hobbies include cooking, dancing, reading, and practicing and performing astonishing magic tricks. Those who know me well describe me to be a personable, positive, and persuasive leader, and those are characteristics I strive to embody daily. As a doctor, my dream is not just save lives, but to teach people how to live.
WHY ONCOLOGY?
My motivation for choosing this particular field lies in my experiences. I always found interest in the mysteries that none have solved. So many people have told me that cancer is one of those incurable mysteries. In fact, when I worked for two months at a cancer research lab in san antonio this summer, an expert on the disease told me, “If someone tells you that they’ve cured cancer, it's false. You may be able to prolong the life of a patient, or reduce the symptoms, but you won’t ever be able to actually cure the disease.” This hit me hard, it hit me harder than when three people close to me were diagnosed with cancer. It was an unintentional effort to crush my hope. But at that moment, I remembered my goal and the positivity that I had exhibited for so long. Thanks to this, my dream to pursue this field of study has been reinforced in me, and I now have an unwavering resolve to see my goal through.
