I got the pleasure of going on my second mentor visit this week. It was truly a great feeling to see someone so passionate about what I was doing other than just myself. I explained my final product idea, which was centered around using the idea of hypnotherapy, which I had initially abandoned, to reduce feeling of nausea in chemotherapeutic patients. There had been trials to confirm that this works, but I wanted to be able prove it myself and really reinforce the idea that this was a feasible way to help patients.
Dr. Cavalier showed so much enthusiasm as I told her about my product proposal and had so many suggestions on how to improve the experiment. It was listening to her that I learned how truly beneficial the idea of a mentorship is. I did so much more than just learn from her advice and criticism, I was inspired by her commitment to this project, and was propelled to ensure that this experiment succeeds. It was then I realized the purpose of ISM or any other mentorship: it is not just to teach the mentee, but to inspire him to pursue something he enjoys.
