The Dispersion of Time

Texas HOSA Area 3 had its competition this week, and I was given the opportunity to compete against my peers. My event for the competition was biomedical debate, a team Lincoln-Douglas debate in which we had to argue the topic: America has the best healthcare system in the world. Once at the debate, we would randomly be assigned a side, and have to present our case supporting that side.

Naturally, we thought that affirming the resolution would be much more difficult than negating it, so we spent over 70% of our time preparing a solid case to affirm the resolution. This case had very few weak points, and we thought that it was incredible to have built such a strong position for a difficult topic. However, this left us with limited time and energy to come up with a case to refute the resolution. A result was a very mediocre case for this position.

Once at the tournament, sure enough, we were assigned the underprepared negative side. Despite this setback, my team and I managed to win, and placed third in the entire conference. Now we will be going to state, and I will sure to use the lesson I learned from the area conference: not to put all my eggs into one basket.
